Meet the mentee: Waqas Durrani
When University of Tasmania student Waqas Durrani found out he had secured a job as client relationship manager at a financial services company, he was understandably excited.
Anxious to make a good impression on his first day, Waqas drew upon advice Alex had given him: that the way he interacted with his colleagues in a new job would set the tone for his future relationships and networks within the organisation.
‘It comes down to your communication style and your ability to show people your own value’, Alex had told him. ‘At your stage in your career, the important thing will be not only the work you do, but also the way you conduct yourself, and the nature with which you speak to people.
‘For the first few weeks of a job you should focus on getting in there and learning the job, and also making sure you learn people’s names. Learn as many names as you can. And from that, you’ll naturally begin conversations with people.’
So Waqas ensured he introduced himself to as many of his new colleagues as possible, repeating their names as a mark of respect and to help him remember them. He also worked out a simple, yet, effective tip: ‘You have to wear a smile every day,’ Waqas said. ‘It’s the best accessory you can have. It’s something everyone can do. And it makes you seem more approachable and warm to people and they are receptive to that. They will smile and be friendly in return.’
The importance of having a good attitude towards a new job, and to focus on doing a great job each day, was also something that Alex shared with Waqas.
‘When you’re new to a role there’s a lot to learn, and Alex taught me that my goal should always be to improve and push myself further — not to simply become successful.’
Waqas is settling in to his new role very well, and says that he feels proud to be a part of his new team. When he goes to work, he is grateful for the opportunity and he reminds himself that he was hired because people believed in him.
